This summers' Walking Weekend, will be held in The North York Moors
National Park. It will be a weekend of historical interest as well as excellent walking.
We will base ourselves in and around the beautiful Yorkshire village
of Helmsley which boasts its own ruined castle and, more importantly, good pubs and eateries!
The date has now been set for the weekend
of 31st May/1st June. Make a note in your diary now!
Never been on a walking weekend before? Worry not! This Walking Weekend is aimed as much at 'first-time' walkers as it
is at regular walkers. The walk routes have been chosen for their interest, rather than difficulty. It's all relatively
easy stuff.

As usual, I will lead 2 walks, one on the Saturday & one on the Sunday,
however, this time I shall be accompanied by 'my learned friend' Andy who, when not enjoying a decent pint, is also an
enthusiastic amateur historian.
Like I said, this Walking Weekend will have an historical theme
and, hopefully, we will be able to visit both Rievaulx Abbey and Byland Abbey where Andy will no doubt 'educate' you all on
the 'habits' of the Cistercian Monks (pardon the pun!) and other such historical titbits.
Don't worry, it won't be a stuffy old lecture! As anyone who has ever attended
one of my weekends will tell you, the emphasis is most definitely on having fun and enjoying the company of like-minded
individuals.

But it's not all history. Me & Andy reccied the place over xmas and I can tell you, even in the pouring rain,
it is a place of magic. There is an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. It's like time has stopped when you walk into the
hamlet of Rievaulx. The scenery is a mix of woodland, rolling hills, rivers, valleys and moorland. The amount of bird-life
is amazing, due in no small way, to the amount of food being put out by the gamekeepers for the local Pheasant population.
Pheasant shooting seems very popular in these parts!
The 2 walks I have planned offer very different scenery and if we are blessed with half decent weather will be
memorable.
It really will be well worth a visit.
The cost of this Grough-Stuff weekend of magic, mystery & mirth will be a mere £30 per
person or £15 per day for those that can't make both days.
*The price does not include any entry fees into the Abbey's. As a guide, the entry fee for Rievaulx
Abbey is currently £4.50 for an Adult.
As usual, walk participants are expected to arrange their own accomodation.
